Long Beach Island, NJ
A seashore cottage garden

Design Theme: A cottage garden oasis on a barrier island
Design Elements: Warm bloom colors of yellow, orange and beige welcome visitors with the use of Daylilies, Coreopsis, Butterfly weed, Karl Foerster grass and more Hameln. Rugosa roses, front of house. Pennisetum orientale ‘Hameln’ grass mark side entry continuing beach feel.
Cooler colors are then added with the use of Lavender (Hidcote, Blue Denim), plus Russian Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Little Spire’.
Phlox and Echinacea complement the now cooler color palette.
Entry to the rear of the property continues to offer a cool feel with an evergreen back border of Inkberry, Weigela floribunda, the shade of a silver Poplar, white panicled Hydrangea ‘Bobo’ and Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Twist-n-Shout’, three types of Japanese Forest, Liriope, two varieties of Knock Out Roses and a Tuscarora Crape Myrtle .
The bench is made of repurposed Western Red Cedar.
The totality of the project was a complete garden re-design and planting make-over yet utilizing existing Weigela and Pygmy bamboo along two fence lines plus shade benefit from a stalwart Silver Poplar.

The garden’s bloom and foliage scheme, from warm to cool colors, provides a welcome oasis after hot hours on the beach. Above photo: a hot day dawns over the Atlantic Ocean.
